Does Artwell Counseling accept insurance? No, we do not accept insurance; all services are self-pay. Insurance companies require a formal mental health diagnosis, but many of the issues addressed in counseling, such as relationship concerns, do not fit the criteria for a diagnosis. Counseling often focuses on helping people navigate difficult life situations that may not involve a "disorder." We prioritize your confidentiality, and your records will not be shared with anyone without your express written consent or as required by law (e.g., if safety is at risk). When using insurance to pay for therapy, your records become part of your medical history, which could affect future employment or insurance coverage. Therapy at Artwell Counseling is a collaborative process, where you and your counselor work together to determine the course and duration of treatment. With insurance, however, the number and length of sessions are typically predetermined.
-
How is confidentiality handled? We take your confidentiality seriously and are committed to keeping your information private, following HIPAA guidelines. However, confidentiality may be breached if there is suspected abuse or neglect, or if there is a risk of harm to yourself or others, in accordance with state law and professional ethics.

What can I expect from the first session? In the initial sessions, we'll explore various questions to gain a deep understanding of your history and personal experiences. Together, we'll set goals, and your therapist will create a tailored treatment plan to guide your journey. Many people worry they might "jump all over the place" or "trauma dump" during their first session—rest assured, that's completely normal and okay! We're here to help you feel safe and supported as you begin your process.
-
How frequently do we meet?Research shows that consistent therapy sessions at the start of treatment often lead to better outcomes. We recommend committing to weekly sessions for the first 8 weeks. As we monitor your progress and adjust to your needs, we may adjust the frequency, either increasing or transitioning to biweekly or monthly sessions.
-
Will you just listen or will you actually give me tools? Our therapeutic approach is active and goal-oriented, focusing on listening attentively and providing space for you to process your thoughts. We also equip you with personalized, evidence-based tools to help you navigate your challenges. Each session is tailored to your unique needs, ensuring a supportive and effective experience. However, therapy is not about being told what to do; it's about collaboration and empowering you to find your own solutions.
